Klein Oak grad wins art contest
The Mayors Office of Cultural Affairs recognized Maryela Villegas, a 2010 graduate of Klein Oak High School, at the Latino Art Beat reception as the first place winner in the Houston area.
Villegas created an oil pastel of her father for this competition after her art teacher, Lesia Streckfuss, encouraged her to participate. She recalled that her earliest memories were of drawing, leading her to her take drawing, painting, digital graphics and animation classes at Klein Oak.
Other cities participating in the Latino Art Beat contest are Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and Washington, D.C. This competition has awarded more than $3 million in scholarships.
